Those first few days and weeks after you separate can be a scary, crazy time. Even though it may be taking all of your effort just to get up in the morning, there are a few basic things you should consider.
1. Agree on a short term plan ASAP
Although emotions will be running high it is important that you establish some form of interim plans to ensure that your family is taken care of financially and emotionally. If you can afford to keep running the household on your current budget this is a good place to start. If you can't afford to do this, then workout a budget that you both consider to be fair and reasonable and work backwards from there.
2. Discuss the Family Home
If you or your partner has decided to leave the family home it is important to discuss how you will both continue to pay the mortgage or rental payments.
Your aim is not to decide on a final outcome at this early stage, but to keep the family as stable as possible and to create a situation that enables future discussions to take place.
3. Draw up a budget
Drawing up a budget during the divorce process is the first step in establishing your financial position and can be used in negotiations.
