Ten Tips For Creating Smooth Transitions Between Two Homes

  1. Once you have agreed to a routine, try to stick to it as much as possible. However be prepared to be flexible as situations often arise that will require changes to be made for the benefit of your children.
  2. Use a tool like the Two Homes Organiser to help keep track of your children's routines, activities and communication.
  3. Help your children to feel safe and comfortable in each home by keeping some personal items, toys, and clothes at each parent's home.
  4. Make transfer times pleasant and smooth for the children by being prompt and making sure their bags are packed well before the pick up or drop off time.
  5. Don't use transfer times for important parenting discussions. Call or email the other parent to ensure your children don't get caught in the middle of any conflict.
  6. Give your children time to adjust into each household. Be aware that every child is different, some children like to ease their way back into their home by spending time alone while others may want to spend time with you.
  7. Where possible establish similar rules, routines and boundaries in both houses - especially in regards to discipline and bedtime routines.
  8. Disagreements over suitability of clothes should be discussed between parents not with the children.
  9. Be punctual. If you're running late let the other parent know.
  10. Inform the other parent of basic information such as when the children last ate, what medication they are taking, general mood, school activities etc.
