Legal Aid is available in every state (click here to view Legal Aid offices in your State) of Australia and the services provided include advice and representation on family law issues such as divorce, separation, children's issues and property settlement.
Telephone advice is available at no cost and reasonably easy to access. If you prefer a face-to-face meeting these can be arranged by calling your local office and making an appointment to see someone.
Legal advice is free of charge.
If you need more than legal advice i.e. a lawyer to help you, then you will need to apply for legal aid. Applying for legal aid means that you are asking Legal Aid to represent you or to pay for the cost of a private lawyer to represent you in court.
Legal aid is not free and is means tested. You will still need to pay a contribution; the amount will depend on your financial situation and the area of law.
